A Hydrogen-powered Vision: RTHA’s collaboration with Airbus, KLM, Transavia, Schiphol and Air Products
The aviation industry is on the cusp of a fundamental transformation, with hydrogen positioned as a promising energy carrier for the future. While the role of hydrogen in aviation is still being explored, it’s essential to conduct comprehensive research and take actionable steps toward its potential application. In this context, the Dutch Hydrogen Aviation Hub emerges as a impactful player, supporting the broader initiative to integrate hydrogen into aviation through concrete projects and community involvement, from production and logistics to safe operations.
Pioneering collaboration for sustainable aviation
A significant milestone has been reached on June 3rd with a cooperation agreement between notable industry leaders, including Airbus, KLM, Transavia, Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Air Products. This collaboration aims to develop a strategic roadmap for establishing a Dutch Hydrogen Hub. A roadmap for the airports of Rotterdam The Hague (RTM) and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) will be developed by the consortium.
The Role of the Dutch Hydrogen Aviation Hub
The Dutch Hydrogen Aviation Hub in Rotterdam plays an important role within this roadmap by fostering a community-driven approach and spearheading tangible projects. This hub is not just about theoretical possibilities; it’s about taking concrete actions. Current initiatives at Rotterdam The Hague Airport are the construction of a hydrogen refueling station, a liquid hydrogen storage facility, the exploration of safety procedures regarding hydrogen in aviation and conducting taxi-tests powered by Aerodelft. This underscores the hub’s commitment to translating research and collaboration into real-world applications. By focusing on infrastructure development, the hub is laying the groundwork for a sustainable aviation future.
